Tour Description
Certainly! Let’s embark on a captivating day trip to Sambor Prei Kuk Temple Group in Kampong Thom City:
Morning Adventure:
- 7:30 AM or 8:00 AM: Our driver will pick you up from your hotel or guesthouse.
- After a scenic 1.5-hour drive, we’ll stop for breakfast at a local restaurant in Kampong Kdei district.
- Continuing our journey for another 1.5 hours, we’ll arrive in Kompong Thom City.
- Kompong Thom is situated near the Tonle Sap Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia.
- From there, it’s just a short drive of around 20 minutes to reach Sambor Prei Kuk Temple Group.
Sambor Prei Kuk Temple Group:
- Historical Significance: This archaeological site dates back to the Pre-Angkorian Chenla Kingdom (late 6th to 9th century).
- Isanavarman I, the king, established it as a central royal sanctuary and capital, known then as “Isanapura”.
- UNESCO World Heritage Site: In 2017, Sambor Prei Kuk was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Architectural Features:
- Numerous prasats, octagonal towers, Shiva lingams, and yonis.
- Ponds, reservoirs, and lion sculptures.
- The structures are characteristic of the Pre-Angkorean period, primarily built with brick and some sandstone.
- Clustered Layout:
- The whole compound is divided into three clusters:
- Group N: Prasat Sambor, considered the main temple, dedicated to the reincarnation of Shiva known as Gambhireshvara.
- Group S: Prasat Yeah Puon, including 22 sanctuaries from the 7th century.
- Group C: Consists of more recent temples from the 9th century.
- The whole compound is divided into three clusters:
